God Hates Evil

God Hates Evil
In a culture that often says, "Love is love" and "Don't judge," many people have forgotten a truth that Scripture repeatedly declares: God hates evil.
That statement may make some people uncomfortable, but it is not controversial in the Bible. The God who is perfectly holy, righteous, and just cannot be indifferent toward wickedness. God's hatred of evil is not a flaw in His character—it is a reflection of His goodness.
A Good God Must Hate Evil
Imagine a judge who smiled at murder, ignored abuse, and excused corruption. We would not call that judge loving. We would call him unjust.
In the same way, God does not overlook evil because He is good. His holiness demands that He oppose everything that destroys, corrupts, and rebels against His perfect will.
Scripture says:
"For You are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with You. The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes; You hate all evildoers."
— Psalm 5:4-5
God does not merely dislike evil. He stands against it. He opposes it because evil is the corruption of everything He created to be good.
What Does God Hate?
The Bible specifically tells us things God hates:
"There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers."
— Proverbs 6:16-19
God hates pride.
God hates lies.
God hates violence.
God hates injustice.
God hates the destruction of human life.
Why? Because every one of these things is contrary to His character.
God's Hatred of Evil Reveals His Love
Many people ask, "How can a loving God hate?"
The better question is: How could a loving God not hate evil?
Because God loves righteousness, He hates wickedness.
Because God loves truth, He hates lies.
Because God loves life, He hates murder.
Because God loves His creation, He hates the sin that destroys it.
Psalm 45:7 says:
"You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness."
God's hatred of evil is not separate from His love. It is the necessary result of His love for what is good.
The Greatest Evil
The greatest evil is not merely the crimes we see on the news. The greatest evil is rebellion against God.
Scripture teaches that every person has sinned and fallen short of God's glory.
"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
— Romans 3:23
The problem of evil is not just "out there." It is in the human heart.
Before we point fingers at the world, we must recognize that apart from Christ, we too stand guilty before a holy God.
The Cross: Where Justice and Mercy Meet
God's response to evil was not to ignore it.
He judged it.
At the cross, Jesus Christ bore the punishment that sin deserved.
"He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree."
— 1 Peter 2:24
The cross demonstrates two truths simultaneously:
-
God hates evil so much that it required judgment.
-
God loves sinners so much that He sent His Son to bear that judgment in their place.
The wrath of God against sin and the love of God for sinners meet at Calvary.
A Call to Reject Evil
As followers of Christ, we are not called to make peace with sin. We are called to hate what God hates and love what God loves.
Romans 12:9 commands:
"Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good."
The world celebrates compromise.
The disciple pursues holiness.
The world excuses sin.
The believer repents of it.
The world conforms.
The Christian obeys Christ.
Final Thoughts
God does not hate evil because He is harsh.
He hates evil because He is holy.
He hates evil because He is just.
He hates evil because He is good.
And because He is good, He has made a way for sinners to be forgiven through Jesus Christ.
The question is not whether God hates evil.
The question is whether we will turn from it and follow the One who conquered it.
Obey Christ. Defy the World.
