The Subtle Sin of Pride (And Why It’s Harder to Kill Than You Think)

Pride isn’t always loud.

It doesn’t always look like arrogance, boasting, or thinking you’re better than everyone else. Sometimes it’s quiet. Subtle. Hidden under things that even look… righteous.

And that’s what makes it dangerous.

Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Most of us read that and think, “That’s not me.”
But pride doesn’t just show up in obvious ways—it shows up in the heart.

💔 The Pride We Don’t Talk About

Pride can look like:

  • Wanting recognition for what you do
  • Feeling frustrated when you’re overlooked
  • Thinking your way is the right way
  • Comparing yourself to others (even spiritually)
  • Struggling to surrender control

And if I’m being honest… this is something I’ve had to check in my own heart.

There are moments where I want things to go my way.
Moments where I feel like I’ve put in the work, so I should see the results.
Moments where I catch myself thinking, “Why isn’t this happening yet?”

That’s pride.

Not loud. Not obvious.
But still rooted in self instead of surrender.

🔥 Pride vs. Obedience

Pride says:
👉 “I know what’s best.”

Obedience says:
👉 “God, You know what’s best.”

James 4:6
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

That verse is heavy.

God doesn’t just dislike pride… He opposes it.

That means when we walk in pride, we’re actually positioning ourselves against God—while thinking we’re still walking with Him.

⚔️ The Battle Is Internal

The truth is, pride is one of the hardest sins to kill because:

  • It hides in good works
  • It disguises itself as confidence
  • It convinces you you're right

But Scripture calls us to something different:

Luke 9:23
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”

Denying yourself means:

  • Letting go of control
  • Letting go of recognition
  • Letting go of your way

That’s not easy.
But that’s where freedom is.

🙏 What I’m Learning

I’m learning that obedience isn’t about outcomes… it’s about surrender.

I’m learning that God doesn’t need me to make things happen—He wants me to trust Him.

I’m learning that even when I feel overlooked, unseen, or frustrated…
God is still working.

And maybe the real test isn’t:
👉 “Will this succeed?”
But:
👉 “Will you stay obedient even if it doesn’t look like what you expected?”

🕊 Final Thought

Pride builds kingdoms for self.
Humility builds a life surrendered to God.

1 Peter 5:6
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you.”

Not your timing.
Not your way.
His.

🙏 Prayer

Lord, search my heart and reveal any pride within me.
Help me to walk in humility and surrender, not control.
Teach me to trust Your timing, Your plan, and Your way.
Let my life reflect obedience, not self.
