The Truth Will Set You Free
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." — John 8:32
This may be one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, yet it is often one of the most misunderstood.
Our culture loves the idea of freedom. We are told freedom means doing whatever we want, living however we choose, and answering to no one but ourselves. But Jesus offers a radically different definition of freedom.
When Jesus spoke these words, He wasn't talking about political freedom, financial freedom, or freedom from difficult circumstances. He was talking about something much deeper: freedom from the bondage of sin.
The people listening to Jesus believed they were already free. They were descendants of Abraham and considered themselves God's people. Yet Jesus responded:
"Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin." (John 8:34)
The word translated "servant" literally means slave. Jesus was exposing a truth many still reject today: sin is not freedom—it is slavery.
Sin promises satisfaction but leaves us empty.
Sin promises control but takes control of us.
Sin promises life but ultimately leads to death.
The alcoholic says, "I can stop whenever I want."
The angry person says, "That's just how I am."
The proud person says, "No one tells me what to do."
Yet all are bound by the very thing they think they control.
This is why truth is so important.
Before we can be set free, we must first see reality as it truly is. We must recognize our condition before a holy God. We must acknowledge that we have all fallen short of His perfect standard.
But Jesus doesn't stop with exposing our bondage. He offers freedom.
Just a few verses later He declares:
"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." (John 8:36)
Notice that freedom is not found in self-help, positive thinking, religion, politics, wealth, or personal achievement. Freedom is found in a Person.
Freedom is found in Jesus Christ.
The world says freedom is the ability to do whatever you want.
Jesus says freedom is being released from the power of sin so you can become what God created you to be.
A fish is free in the water, not on the shore.
A train is free on the tracks, not in a field.
Likewise, mankind is most free when living according to God's design.
The greatest prison is not made of steel bars. It is a heart enslaved to sin and separated from God.
The greatest freedom is not found in independence from God. It is found in surrender to Christ.
That is the message of Obedient Rebellion.
The world says, "Follow your heart."
Jesus says, "Follow Me."
The world says, "Create your own truth."
Jesus says, "I am the truth."
The world says, "Freedom is doing what you want."
Jesus says, "The truth will set you free."
True freedom begins when we stop rebelling against God and start obeying Christ.
Obey Christ. Defy the world.
